Viewing videos on computer
Requirements for viewing videos
To view Moniviestin videos you will need at least 1 Mbps internet connection. For HD videos the miminum requirements are 2 Mbps (720p quality) and 4 Mbps (Full HD). The videos will work in all commonly used modern browsers supporting HTML5/H.264 video playback. If you have problems viewing videos, make sure that your browser version is up to date (Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Apple Safari).
On mobile devices (mobile phones, tablet computers) you will need a mobile data connection, or the device must be connected to a wireless network. To avoid additional mobile data fees, it is recommended to check that you have a fixed price data package in your subscription.
Enabling subtitles
If there are subtitles available, you will see a quotation mark at the bottom right corner of the video player. The subtitles are turned off by default, but you can switch them on in the following way:
- Move your mouse pointer on the video player, and the settings bar will appear from the bottom.
- Click the quotation mark icon and choose the preferred language (English, for example).
- If you want to disable the subtitles, you can use the same menu and choose "subtitles off".
Choosing the viewing quality
By default, Moniviestin is showing the videos in 720p quality. Depending on the source material, there can be up to four quality settings available, the lowest being 240p and the highest being 1080p. If your internet connection is not fast enough to play high definition video, you can choose the lower quality (480p, for example). For the best quality possible, you can choose the 1080p version if available.
You can choose the quality in the following way:
- Move your mouse pointer on the video player, and the settings bar will appear from the bottom.
- Click the gear icon and choose the preferred viewing quality.
Keyboard shortcuts
During video playback, you can control some of the functions with your keyboard. Make sure that the video screen has been chosen as an active window. If not, you must click on the video first. Then you can try the following keyboard shortcuts:
- Space: pause and continue playback
- Left and right arrow: jump 10 seconds back or forward
- Up and down arrow: increase / reduce audio volume
- F key: Fullscreen on/off
- Numbers 1-9: seek to 10% - 90% position in video playback
- Number 0: play from the beginning
FAQ for viewing videos - Frequently asked questions
Video and audio works fine for a short time but then the audio and/or video drops, why?
Your internet connection is not fast enough for the chosen video quality. Even if you have a broadband internet connection, some content (for example Full HD/1080p videos) may require even faster internet connection. You can reduce the quality by clicking the "gear" icon and choosing lower resolution.
In some cases you can download the whole video file to your computer via the Downloads (Lataukset) tab below the video and then watch it offline without buffering breaks. You can select the suitable quality (HD, SD, Mobile) for your device. This option is only available if the owner of video in question has allowed it.
The audio levels are very low, what can I do?
The volume can be adjusted from the bottom right corner of the video window. Also check the audio level settings of the computer. It is recommended to use headphones or external speakers, as the audio may sound unclear with low quality laptop speakers.
Where do I get the pathkey?
Pathkey request should be sent to the organizer of the lecture(s) or to the lecturer in question. If you have lost or forgot the pathkey, contact the course teacher. Video support can't give you the pathkey without a proof that you have the right to view the content.
